White Fused Alumina F16 Applications

White fused alumina F16 (White corundum 16 mesh) belongs to coarse-grained WFA abrasives.  In the F series, the smaller the number, the coarser the grain size. F16 has a particle size of approximately 1.0-1.40mm. Its key characteristics include high hardness (Mohs hardness 9, second only to diamond), moderate toughness, high grinding efficiency, and good corrosion resistance and insulation properties. Its applications mainly focus on rough grinding, efficient material removal, and surface pretreatment. And It is widely used in the initial processing stages of various fields such as stainless steel, alloys, etc.

Specifically, there are several types of application in different industries:
I. Metal Processing. Primarily used for “Rough Grinding and Pretreatment”

Metal processing is the core application area for F16 white alumina abrasive, especially for workpieces that require rapid removal of surface material, shape correction, or pretreatment.

  1. Rough grinding of steel/castings. Used for “skinning” metal blanks such as carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel, removing gates, scale, and burrs from castings. It can adjust workpiece dimensions before precision machining quickly(such as lathe or milling) to prepare for subsequent fine grinding/polishing.
  2.  Welded part treatment. Removing weld spatter, slag, and oxide layers from welded surfaces to prevent weld defects from affecting subsequent coating or assembly. That application commonly occurs in mechanical manufacturing and steel structures (such as bridges and pressure vessels).
  3. Metal surface rust/oxide removal. For rust and oxide layers on metal surfaces after long-term storage or high-temperature processing (such as hot-rolled steel sheets and forgings). The impact and abrasion of F16 abrasive effectively restores the metal surface, preparing it for subsequent painting, electroplating, etc.
  4. Sandblasting/etching.  As a sandblasting abrasive, high-pressure air drives F16 particles to impact the metal surface, efficiently removing thick rust and old paint layers. It is sutiable for the renovation and maintenance of ships and large machinery. In the meantime,it can also works for rough etching of glass and ceramic surfaces to create matte textures or preliminary patterns.
II. Grinding Wheel Manufacturing: As a “Core Raw Material for Rough Grinding Wheels”

F16 white alumina abrasive is commonly used to manufacture various types of rough grinding wheels, directly applied in industrial production for batch grinding operations. Common types of grinding wheels and their applications are as follows:

White alumina ceramic grinding wheels: Mounted on grinding machines, they are used for manual rough grinding of metal workpieces (such as flattening tool edges, deburring bolt heads), or in automated rough grinding production lines (such as edge finishing of automotive parts).

III. Wear-Resistant Applications: Leveraging “High Hardness and Wear Resistance”

Besides the aforementioned main applications, F16 white alumina abrasive can also be used in wear-resistant applications:

  1. Wear-resistant flooring aggregate.. By mixing F16 white alumina abrasive with epoxy resin or concrete to create wear-resistant flooring (such as for factory floors or parking lots), its high hardness enhances the surface’s wear and impact resistance, extending its service life.
  2. Wear-resistant filler for fiberglass and other products. White alumina can F16 scatter to the surface of products. It can enhance wear and corrosion resistance.

In summary, white fused alumina F16 main usage lies in its high efficiency and fast grinding. Whether for sandblasting, surface treatment, grinding, or grinding wheel manufacturing. It addresses the core need of “rapidly removing excess material, correcting the surface, and preparing for subsequent fine machining,” making it an indispensable coarse-grained abrasive material in industrial production.
